Third International Congress on Muscle Disease

The Third International Congress on Muscle Diseases was held at Newcastle, Great Britain, Sept 13-21, 1974, under the direction of J.N. Walton and W.G. Bradley. More than 700 participants were present, and the program (Excerpts Med Int Congr Ser No. 334) contains 419 abstracts. Simultaneous meetings and presentations by display had to be used, and some papers were presented by title only. It is difficult to select only a few presentations for report.

Perhaps the central theme dominating questions of muscle disease concerns neural influence on muscle. Cross-innervation studies and the use of tissue culture were the subjects of numerous presentations and several symposia. Holtzer (Philadelphia) and Yaffe (Rehovoth) presented contrasting views of the role of fusion of myoblasts on biochemical functions; Holzer does not believe that fusion itself initiates biochemical maturation.
