Formulas for Calculating Percent of Nerve Water and Sodium.—
In the article, "Peripheral Nerve Segmental Demyelination Induced by Intraneural Diphtheria Toxin Injection: Sodium Na 24 and Carbon 14-Labeled Inulin Kinetics in Diphtheria Toxin-Injected Nerve and the Effect of Hydrocortisone," published in the February ARCHIVES (30:163-168, 1974), the form of presentation of the calculations in the "Methods" section (page 165) was confusing and in one case incorrect. For clarity, the entire 12 formulas used by Levin and associates in their computations are presented: wet wt —dry wt (1) % water =—x 100 wet wt [Na] (mEq) /kg nerve (2) Actual [Na] Space =—x 100 [Na] (mEq) /liter plasma water* HSA-131I-cpm/gm tissue (3) Nerve Plasma Volume = Pv =— HSA-131I-cpm/gm plasma gm plasma water (4) Nerve Plasma Water = Pw = Isotope Space (%) gm plasma R—100Pw (5) 1—Pv cpm/gm tissue (6) R =—x 100 cpm/gm plasma water ICWww (liter/kg ww) = (% water - sheath spacet - ECSt) /100 (7)
