This long monograph is in part a sequel to the first author's earlier textbook, "Oto-Neurologie," published in 1944. The authors, both otologists, have drawn extensively from their clinical experience, particularly at la Salpétrière, and from a comprehensive acquaintance with the literature of their fields of interest.
The first quarter of the volume is given to a detailed discussion of the anatomy of the inner ear and to methods of examination of vestibular and auditory function. Then follows a description of various disorders of the labyrinth and of its central connections, including both infra- and supratentorial structures.
Nearly all of the clinical sections suffer from unverified assumptions. Neat and sometimes elaborate subclassifications by etiology lack adequate pathologic support. This is notably true of the sections on "labyrinthitis" and on Ménière's disease and its illegitimate relative, "pseudo-Ménière's disease."
