This little monograph constitutes a good survey of the problem of postvaccinial encephalitis, based on autopsied cases of the disease occurring in the Netherlands since 1925 and on a survey of the pertinent literature. It is the author's contention that the encephalitis following vaccination is a special microglial encephalitis, but that this is not seen exclusively following vaccination. It is also seen after measles, and rarely following rubella and varicella. Associated with microglial encephalitis is a special clinical picture. The condition was rarely seen before 1923 and is never found in children under 2 years of age. The disease sometimes follows revaccination. The specific type of microglial encephalitis with its characteristic clinical features must be separated from other forms of postvaccinial encephalitis. These may simulate true postvaccinial encephalitis, but are associated with other pathological features.
