The new edition of this brief neurological text condenses into 424 pages an overview of clinical neurology. It is divided into five general parts entitled Disorders of Function, Disorders of Anatomical Regions, Infections, Diffuse and Systemic Disorders, and Psychological Disorders.
The book, intended for students and nonspecialists, is written in excellent prose and the knowledge disseminated is accurate and current. The first 128 pages concerning the examination are particularly good although the interpretation of the neurological examination would seem better placed directly after instructions concerning examination technique.
There are accounts of many subjects too brief to be of use and omission of some important practical matters. Concerning the comatose patient, there is no guide to the proper sequence and choice of examination and tests and their relative urgency. Discussion of extrapyramidal syndromes omits mention of phenothiazines and other drugs as the cause of these conditions. Cerebromacular degeneration is described under
