Volume 37 of Progress in Brain Research contains 41 chapters divided into eight sections, all on central aspects of vestibular mechanisms. It contains the papers delivered at a symposium held in Pisa in July 1971. Each of the papers is highly technical and most are definitive. Taken together, the papers describe in detail the anatomy and physiology of labyrinthine input to central vestibular structures, the relationships between the vestibular nuclei and the cerebellum, efferent control of labyrinthine receptors, and vestibulo-oculomotor relationships. The figures are excellent and many of the scanning electron micrographs are elegant. A good and up-to-date bibliography accompanies most of the papers. This is a useful reference book for investigators working on vestibular mechanisms or for clinicians who want to learn more about the basic aspects of this system which is so important to clinical neurology.
