Clinical neurology is a large structure and one might expect the scientific foundations of such an edifice to run deep. Thus, it is not surprising that a book on the scientific foundations of neurology which is 500 pages long and one inch thick represents a sampling rather than a comprehensive review. It is also not surprising that a book of 57 chapters by as many authors, some comprising only a few pages, might be incomplete and uneven in its coverage. Despite these problems, however, the authors and editors have done a good job of describing for the student who knows some neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and clinical neurology, the state of our knowledge of basic science underlying clinical disease.
