This is a timely monograph reviewing the issues that relate to hydrocephalus from all points of view, beginning with cerebrospinal fluid physiology, and then dealing with pathogenesis, pathology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of hydrocephalus. It is timely because the past 15 to 20 years have seen the development of a breadth of experience with regard to shunting procedures, and more recently, a significant body of new information has come from the laboratory on cerebrospinal fluid physiology and experimental studies of hydrocephalus. It is an excellent time to reconsider the problem, and this volume represents a more inclusive review of the subject than Dorothy Russell's monograph of 1949, which dealt primarily with pathology. This volume also reviews pathology, but it does not supersede Russell's monograph, and adds little in that area.
