The Electron Miscroscopic Atlas of Brain Tumors by Poon, Hirano, and Zimmerman is one of the first efforts to bring together many of the ultrastructural observations originally published separately. For this reason the work is commended to the attention of persons interested in the neurosciences. Many of the more useful features of the ultrastructure of the more common brain tumors are clearly illustrated. Some specific features illustrated include the desmosomes of craniopharyngiomas, the large number and size of secretory granules in eosinophilic adenomas compared to chromophobe adenomas, the junctional complexes of meningiomas, and the differences in basement membrane distribution in meningiomas and schwannomas. Other particular features shown are the connective tissue and large extracellular spaces in cerebellar sarcomas, the random distribution of tubules in ependymomas, and the many fibers in astrocytomas. The Atlas also shows that some ependymomas may not demonstrate cilia, microvilli, or junctional complexes. Also oligodendrogliomas may not
