In the introduction the author states that "the purpose of this book is to consider what evidence is available to enable some tentative conclusions to be made about the cause of multiple sclerosis." To this end the author has succeeded in a concise, lucid, and critical review of the progress of research in multiple sclerosis to the end of 1970. Since many workers begin perusal of any new book in their field by searching the bibliography to determine if their contributions have been cited, the author excuses these omissions by stating that "nothing is achieved by discussing the priorities of who did what" and "such historical erudition or ancestor worship takes up space and wastes the reader's time."
