The premise that it is the journey, not the arrival, which really matters is well illustrated in this book. To compile and supervise the making of a mammoth compendium on endocrinology must have been a long and arduous task, and only its editor can tell us if, at the end of it all, it has been worthwhile. This volume, like most others of its size, exemplifies the vivid and famous distinction between the efficient (working) parts of a book and the dignified (ceremonial) parts. In endocrinology, the latter are, of course, abundant, and 408 excellent illustrations of stunted or oversized boys and girls (the distinction between the sexes being sometimes difficult) adds bulk and ceremony.
The efficient (working) parts are not forgotten either. The book is divided into 20 main sections, each dealing in great detail with separate endocrine organs. In addition, chapters have been assigned to general endocrinology, the
