The first edition of Harrington's textbook, The Visual Fields, appeared in 1956 and filled a definite need in ophthalmology, neurology, and neurosurgery. It received almost immediate and well-deserved recognition. The third edition is most welcome and reflects continued demand for this book. It is a thorough and sensible compendium of useful knowledge concerning the techniques for obtaining visual fields and their diagnostic interpretation. The illustrations are exceptionally clear and cover the entire range of field abnormalities. The text is lucid and readable. The bibliography is adequate.

The visual field examination is a significant part of the ophthalmic examination. It provides information obtainable in no other way and can provide essential clues to diagnosis. However, in my experience, it is generally poorly performed and poorly utilized.
