Leukodystrophies are rare diseases of the nervous system. In spite of this, they have aroused unusual interest. Biochemists and electron microscopists have competed in the elucidation of mechanisms and, undoubtedly, the former have collected all the laurels so far.
A great deal of knowledge has accumulated in recent years, making ignoramuses of all but a few experts in the field. A monograph which summarizes what has been achieved in the study of leukodystrophies is, therefore, timely and welcome.
This book deals with metachromatic leukodystrophy; Krabbe's disease; sudanophilic leukodystrophy; Pelizaeus-Merzbacher's disease; Canavan's disease, herein referred to as spongy leukodystrophy; and rare disorders which are difficult to classify in the above categories. These include cases of Addison's disease, associated with diffuse sclerosis of the brain. The book has most useful tables which summarize all the reported cases and their pathological features, and superb illustrations which accompany the tables. Fittingly, it starts with
