In spite of major advances in our knowledge of the causes and prevention of mental subnormality, and heroic efforts to find ways to care for the subnormal child and adult at home and in the community, we still have a vast number of mentally defective individuals in hospitals and institutions across the United States. Their care represents a problem of enormous magnitude, and any review directed toward improving the efficiency and humanity with which it is accomplished should be most welcome. Unfortunately, this volume, which is essentially a textbook for students of nursing in institutions for the subnormal, falls short of the mark. It includes not only a mass of detail regarding the mechanics of administering a nursing program and caring for the patient's daily needs, but it also attempts to cover every aspect of the problem of mental subnormality.
