Beware of the introduction that calls for "meaningful communication among scientists." What often follows is extremely difficult to decipher. This book is no exception, and it is not recommended to either neurologists or pediatricians who have only a passing interest in the problem of infantile autism. This volume is the product of a coloquium held at Indiana University with the express purpose of bringing together investigators with divergent viewpoints and approaches. A major achievement of the symposium appears to have been recognition that a consensus was needed concerning minimal criteria demanded to identify and specify the syndrome. This is quite clear as one reads the book. Many of the papers do not describe their subject population in detail, but the data that is given is sufficient to indicate that in many instances information is not being collected on a homogeneous population similar to the one Kanner described in 1943.
