In assessing this brief monograph, one must consider the intention of the author. He has not attempted an inclusive survey of the subject of headache, rather he has written a book for the physician, particularly the general practitioner interested in the problem of headache. The text is well-organized, and the style of writing both interesting and lucid. The first part of the book deals with the causes and classification of headache and the history and physical examination of the headache patient. The author then discusses intracranial and extracranial sources of headache, muscle-contraction, and migraine headache. It is hazardous to examine the complexities of headache in a book of this length, and the author has done well considering the brevity of the text. Dr. Lance gives case material and observations from his own clinical experience, thus providing the reader with practical insights often missing from more detailed books. The references are . . .
