This volume on operative neurosurgery, the third edition of a text whose senior author is one of the most respected surgeons in this field, is of considerable interest from a number of aspects. The historical data dispersed liberally throughout the book are concise, interesting, and represent an area often omitted from current writings in the field. In a similar fashion, the anatomical discussions preceding the actual operative descriptions are well organized and useful. An excellent bibliography is available at the close of each section of the book.

The first edition was published in 1954. However, it appears to the reviewer that the authors have underestimated their audience of 1970. There are no longer general surgeons who dabble in neurosurgery, and from the point of view of the neurosurgical resident and practicing neurosurgeons, the book has deficiencies.
