The book is a collection of papers previously presented at the December 1968 meeting of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology which confronts the reader with some of the ideas and techniques involved in current psychopharmacology research. The papers presented at this meeting fall into different categories and the diversity of the disciplines could be considered by some readers as an asset and by others as a shortcoming. Indeed, it might have been preferable if fewer subjects would have been discussed and if the papers would have been categorized.

Two papers cover the physiology and biochemistry of the serotonin (5HT) neurons. The paper by Bloom eloquently analyzes the present status of knowledge concerning the localization and the physiological role of 5HT containing neurons and indicates the areas of research that require additional information.
