This volume, originally in the series of monographs on neurology and psychiatry, is the first of a new neurology series marking the separation of the two disciplines. Fittingly it is concerned with the development of the human cerebral hemisphere and is based on serial sections of 29 specimens ranging in size from 3 mm length to 8 months' gestation. This is a scholarly and careful work in the best tradition of German morphology and it is greatly enhanced by meticulous diagrams and beautiful illustrations. A unique feature is the reconstruction of the cytoarchitecture of the walls of the lateral ventricles throughout intrauterine life. With the current interest in developmental defects and child neurology, it should be of use to those in this specialty, but clinicians might refer to it also for an explanation of developmental abnormalities of the brain.
