It is said that there has never been any research into the primary causes of multiple sclerosis, only into its effects, and from the pages of this small volume one can see how the practitioners of this art have enjoyed themselves doing it. This is a pity, and to a large extent because of the present stringencies of funding, an opportunity missed.

The book is divided into three sections, one dealing with the morphology and pathogenesis; the second is entitled, "Clinical Research"; and the third deals with prognosis, therapy, and rehabilitation. The known features of the disease, quantitative measures of the disorder and its manifestations, and the peculiar geographic distribution are exhumed from old papers and polished for presentation at the symposium in Vienna. Disconcerting to those engaged in multiple sclerosis research must be the realization that since the symposium was held in 1968 there has been no worthwhile new . . .
