This excellent and comprehensive text represents the collected papers on impact injury and crash protection which were given at the recent Wayne State University Symposium on Impact Injury and Crash Protection. The book is divided into four parts: mechanisms of impact injury, research methods in impact injury, tolerance of impact injury, and impact injury mitigation.
There are six papers directly related to problems involving the central nervous system. The emphasis in these is on the pathophysiology of head injury. L. M. Thomas presents a clear discussion of the role of sheer stress, elastic flow, and pressure gradients. In addition, he elaborates on the importance of translational, angular, and rotational acceleration. Unterharnscheidt also discusses these factors, and in addition, the pathophysiology of the "central cavitation lesion."
In a fascinating paper, Hirsch, Ommaya, and Mahone present the results of their research pertaining to the tolerance of the subhuman primate brain to cerebral
