The second edition of this text, which is the standard reference for neurosurgeons, neurologists, and pediatricians, represents clearly the work of Donald D. Matson, who died on May 10, 1969. This remarkable surgeon devoted his career to the development of techniques to diagnose and treat neurosurgical conditions affecting infants and children. One can hear Matson's steady voice as the book is read and can acquire that knowledge not easily gained in clinical medicine without the special qualities of observation, candor, and self-discipline which marked the personality of the author. No attempt is made to discuss all methods of treatment, but rather one is given a personal account of the results obtained in applying sound neurosurgical principles to the unique problems of the developing nervous system.
