Most of the modern work on diseases of muscle has appeared in English, and the main justification for this book on hereditary muscular dystrophies is to acquaint the German reader with this wealth of new information. In this task the authors have succeeded admirably.

There are chapters on classification and clinical manifestations of muscular dystrophies with an excellent historical overview of the problem. The chapter on pathology is profusely illustrated with most remarkable photomicrographs and also contains an excellent section on ultrastructural changes. An up-to-date and exhaustive chapter on the biochemistry of muscular dystrophies has a discussion of myopathies in animals and comparisons with human myopathies which are most helpful to the clinically oriented reader. Perhaps the most useful section is entitled "orthopedic and physical treatment of muscular dystrophies."
