The last comprehensive survey of myasthenia gravis was written by K. E. Osserman more than a decade ago. There is probably a need for a general review now. But to someone looking for comprehensive reviews, the collection of essays edited by Greene is too brief, and many chapters are too personal. The product will satisfy neither novice nor expert. It is customary to complain that multiauthored books are uneven in quality, and this one certainly suffers from the weakness of inordinate contrasts. The chapters on pathology by Kristin Henry, and on immunological aspects by Anderson and Vetters are thorough and complete surveys, depicting what we know and what the problems are. Most of the other sections are simple statements of personal experience, without reference to the rest of the world. But even a good personal statement may leave something to be desired.
