in many ways an honorable institution: a great man's pupils would not only show gratitude to their teacher by their individual essays, but would often make contributions to knowledge at the same time. Many of us in the United States have thought that the Festschrift died with the destruction and dispersal of German scholarship before and during the Second World War. But this volume dedicated to Professor Gozzano shows that the tradition has been maintained in other lands. Over 100 individual papers are presented.

Unfortunately, the editorial board may have overreached itself. The contributions, which range far and wide over the fields of neurology and psychiatry, are much too heterogeneous to be of interest to any single reader. Moreover, some of them are original contributions to knowledge while others are short "thinkpieces" chiefly notable for their desire to render homage to Professor Gozzano.
