The author of this large volume, a distinguished physiologist, discusses the general physiology and the autonomic functions of the nervous system. The book is the first of four volumes; subsequent volumes will deal with motor (vol 2), sensory (3), and psychic functions (4). Apart from a few chapters contributed by some of the author's close associates, the book is the work of a single individual who has made many original contributions in neurophysiology.
The book begins with 84 pages of introductory general neurophysiology. This material is independent of the material in the rest of the book but has been inserted to provide background information for all four volumes. The remainder of the book is devoted to a detailed discussion of the physiology of the autonomic nervous system.
