Gentlemen, I have brought this man to you, that you might yourselves examine him, and be satisfied as to certain facts, which men, high in science, and respectable in our profession, have denied with a heat and pertinacity which I can never understand, and which surely ought not to belong to such an inquiry.

For years I had the conviction that the nerves, and especially the nerves of the face, had distinct functions. I was deterred from announcing my opinions, because I conceived it impossible but that experience and observation must have long ago ascertained the fact. Yes, gentlemen, from the dissection, I conceived that the branches of the fifth nerve, and of the portio dura of the seventh nerve, must have distinct offices.
