ABNORMAL sexual behavior associated with temporal lobe dysfunction has frequently been described in man^1-3 and in animals.^4,5 Classically, the disorder in man is hyposexuality, but instances of hypersexuality and perversity have been reported.

This paper examines the sexual behavior of 100 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy which is a common form of temporal lobe dysfunction. Their social backgrounds and psychiatric disturbances were diverse, but they were selected in that their disorder was severe enough to warrant, and was suitable for, temporal lobectomy. This has the advantage that the abnormalities in the temporal lobe were focal and the effects of treatment ascertained. This is the first paper to report the results of a specific inquiry into the sexual behavior of a large consecutive series of such patients in order to examine the frequency as well as the quality of sexual abnormalities.
