The monograph deals with the operative treatment of the disease of Parkinsonism by electrocoagulation of the globus pallidus. The volume is subdivided into six chapters: an introduction (description of the method of pallidotomy, i.e., electrocoagulation of the globus pallidus, using the stereotaxic instrument developed by T. Riechert); mathematical method of focusing (presentation of case histories); discussion of results (postoperative changes of symptoms, complications, theoretical conclusions, comparison with other surgical techniques, indications and contraindications); summary, and a bibliography of 213 references.

The main importance of the volume is in its detailed presentation of 67 patients who underwent pallidotomy between 1956 and 1958: Seventy-six electrocoagulations were performed on 42 male patients (age 37 to 77 years) and on 25 female patients (age 37 to 67 years).
