This is the second edition of the third part of an atlas on hypothalamic and thalamic physiology. Professor Hess's pioneering work on the localization of function in these areas in the cat is summarized by selected frames from movies with histological sections indicating the site of stimulation necessary to produce the illustrated effects. Of great help is the citation on the same page of his own papers describing the phenomena in detail and of other work confirming and extending his observations. A section illustrating the effects on blood pressure and respiration with accompanying maps to show the area stimulated is also included.

This book is a welcome summary of a complex subject and the illustrations and diagrams aid in memorizing the areas involved in vegetative function. Electrical stimulation or partial destruction of the brain, however, may not be relevant to normal function nor to clinical neurology. Nevertheless, this book will . . .
