Roumania, we are told, is the Gaullist France of the Soviet bloc, a stance well illustrated by this volume from Bucharest. The earlier chapters are written from the viewpoint of Pavlovian belief: even if one accepts these neurophysiologic theories, their relevance to the problems of aphasia seems at present slimly documented. Later the authors break away from the Russian straitjacket and discuss these problems from the clinico-empirical viewpoint more familiar to us. This portion of the book is largely a summary of articles, Western and Eastern. Unfortunately, they are presented in such a way that those familiar with aphasia will have little to learn, while the uninitiated will have their scepticism increased. . . .
