This biography of that rare medical statesman, Alan Gregg, is the work of Wilder Penfield, founder and first director of the Montreal Neurological Institute. In a sense, it fulfills an obligation; this Neurological Institute could not have come into being in 1934 without the assistance of the Rockefeller Foundation under Gregg's aegis. Indeed, the Foundation had declined assistance to McGill University in 1929, when Dr. Richard Pearce, Gregg's immediate predecessor, had been the director of the Division of Medical Education. That this is hardly the basis for biography is patent and attested to, among other things, by the title. The first portion derives from John D. Rockefeller, who regarded the responsibilities of great wealth with considerable concern. The word "epic" indicates grandeur in a man, a way of looking at Gregg that all developed soon after meeting him. Those who have read one or another of Penfield's books have come
