Electrophysiologic Recordings in Peripheral Nerve Heterografts

THE RECORDING of compound action potentials has often been used to assess the amount of regeneration of nerves which have been cut and sutured1-3 or crushed at one point.3-5 This technique may give a better indication of the state of recovery than histological examination, since, as pointed out by Jacobson and Guth,5 the presence of a few axons may not indicate the ability of the nerve to conduct action potentials. In the case of homografts, in situ electrical recordings indicated a definite improvement of regeneration produced by high-voltage electron irradiation of the grafts prior to placement in peripheral nerve defects.6 Electrical data have not been available for nerve heterografts, however, as heterografts have been thought unsuccessful until recently.7 We wished to record action potentials as an index of recovery in irradiated peripheral nerve heterografts.
