The author has set out to describe his personal experience in selection of patients with hydrocephalus for treatment with the ventriculo-atrial shunt (Holter) and describes 95 children treated between 1959 and 1964. Of this number, 25 were of the congenital variety unassociated with midline closure defects, meningitis, or tumor. Approximately 80% of the patients in the series is alive, but no useful data are provided about the neurological or psychological status of these children. The author has presented in great detail the technical aspects of the bypass operation. Though this is of interest from a historical viewpoint, the operative technique has been common knowledge for some years in most neurosurgical clinics and it adds little to the usefulness of the book. An attempt has been made to provide some new quantitative data on the function of the Holter valve by a radioactive tracer technique using tagged hippuran. Two hundred references, . . .
