A Medical Discipline Takes Stock

IT is an honor to speak at this assembly of neurological scientists, representatives of other disciplines, and guests who have come together to discuss education in the neurological sciences. I find myself in somewhat of a quandary. As a teacher I have known what it is like to publish your lecture notes in the form of a textbook which then becomes suggested reading. This leaves the teacher two future alternatives, either to cancel or revise his traditional lectures. I was most reluctant to distribute the summary statement of our survey findings if its distribution was also to be followed by my appearance as a plenary session speaker. Being unwilling to review my distributed notes, especially because the full report will later be made available, I cast about for an area of general educational concern which had not been previously reviewed or was not likely to be covered in . . .
