I REGARD it as both an honor and a privilege to be invited as an outsider to a family gathering of this nature. I extend my congratulations to both the American Academy of Neurology and the American Neurological Association for taking the initiative to study, in depth, some of the problems and some of the opportunities which confront you in the field of education. Likewise, I express my appreciation to the Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness for sponsoring a self-study of this kind. It is another illustration of our debt to Dr. Shannon, Dr. Masland, and all who are associated with them in the development of the programs of the National Institutes of Health. I am a loyal alumnus of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and I am particularly enthusiastic about the work of the National Institutes.
