This monograph purports to review the contributions that tissue culture and tissue transplantation techniques have made to the elucidation of questions concerning the nervous system. Unfortunately, it falls far short of its stated aims and, as a result, its value seems rather limited. The outstanding deficiency of this work results from the striking contrast between the comprehensive and well summarized review of the literature from 1900 to 1950 and the fleeting and often incomplete approach to that published since 1950. This is a basic flaw, since this disproportionate approach fails to emphasize the significance of the work since 1950 in which the bulk of the literature deals with studies of long-term organotypic cultures that develop and mature in vitro. These cultures are more closely comparable with the in vivo state than those of the first period in which the experiments were largely short-term and involved explants which merely survived or . . .
