This small paperback book developed from a simple account of the central nervous system prepared 16 years ago by the author for the use of his own students at Manchester. Increasing demand for wide publication stimulated the author to bring the text up-to-date. This is one of the few concise texts that uses the Paris Anatomical Nomenclature.

The text is written clearly and succinctly with judicious use of subtitles. This is not a book that merely outlines the material but one that both describes and explains the most pertinent facts. The illustrations are for the most part line drawings, but a few superb halftones are also used. A carefully selected list of references is appended. A chapter on the development of the nervous system is appropriately located near the back of the book. There is a very adequate index.
