Only the parents of involved children and a relatively small group of dedicated workers were interested in mental retardation 10 to 15 years ago. Parental clamor and the infusion of new money from federal and private sources that resulted from President Kennedy's expressed concern about the mentally retarded created an interest in many areas. New avenues of research, new programs, and numerous publications have been the inevitable consequences of this enthusiasm. The present volume is an outgrowth of a symposium on mental retardation sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California School of Medicine, San Francisco, in November 1964. Other papers have been added so that the 25 authors included represent the fields of psychiatry, pediatrics, public health, pathology, neurology, biological chemistry, genetics, sociology, social welfare, education, vocational rehabilitation, psychology, community organization, and law.
