This is another well-written book from the pen of Dr. Wallace B. Hamby. It is a complete, up-to-date review of carotid-cavernous fistulas. Historical, pathological, diagnostic and therapeutic data are discussed with the author's usual thoroughness. Of particular interest are the numerous fine diagrams illustrating the dynamics of blood flow associated with various methods of treatment.
It is interesting to note that these lesions were first described over 100 years ago, by Travers in 1811, and were first treated by common carotid occlusion in 1837 and by internal carotid ligation in 1847. Dandy in this country and Jefferson in Great Britain, in the 1930's, were preeminent pioneers in their surgical treatment, while Adson in 1942 was the first to advocate occlusion of the ophthalmic as well as the internal carotid artery. Muscle embolization was used as early as 1930, by Brooks of Nashville.
