This is a collection of papers given at a symposium on cerebrospinal fluid held at Rostock in September 1964. A distinguished, but somewhat restricted number of participants gathered under the chairmanship of Johannes Sayk. A. Lowenthal of Antwerp was the honorary chairman. Contributions to three main themes are found: cytology and cytochemistry of cerebrospinal fluid; protein content and diagnostic enzymology, and other diagnostic procedures on the cerebrospinal fluid. A number of techniques for cerebrospinal fluid examination are discussed in great detail.
A feature of advances in diagnostic neurology, characteristic of the middle decades of this century, is the application of biochemical and other special techniques. Because of their growing importance and increasing complexity, few practicing neurologists, even those in contact with academic departments, can follow and understand the significance and relevance of these advances to their daily work.
