The Anterior Choroidal Artery

Introduction

IT IS REPORTED that the anterior choroidal artery supplies the posterior limb of the internal capsule, parts of the basal ganglia, the optic radiation, the lateral geniculate body, the choroid plexus, and other structures.1-4

Clinically, occlusion of this artery is extremely rare, and only a few cases have been reported in the literature.1,2,5-7 The description of the origin of this artery as given in textbooks of neuroanatomy is quite variable.8-10

It is the purpose of this article to report on our investigations of the site of origin, the variations in the size of the vessels on the two sides, and the presence of arteriosclerosis in these vessels. To our knowledge no reports on the latter two aspects of this vessel have been made.
