This book is a summarizing account of the studies of Drs. Vinnikov and Titova on the organ of Corti, conducted over the past 22 years. Their approach is predominantly histo- and cytochemical. Most of this work is presented in English for the first time.

The first two introductory chapters are devoted to a description of the present status of the morphology and physiology of the organ. The next chapter deals with the technique of isolating the cochlea (ie, the modiolus and the soft tissue structures) for in vitro studies. This technique is similar to that used by Neubert, Vosteen, Rauch, et al. Chapters three and four give the "results," ie, describe the histo- and cytochemical experiments in detail. Chapter six gives an account of the evolution of the organ with particular emphasis on its cytochemical aspects.
