So many books on muscle physiology and pathology have been published in the last five years that one would not expect to welcome another, especially when it contains papers given at a meeting 21/2 years prior to publication. Despite these handicaps, "Biochemistry of Muscle Contraction" is a landmark in the development of knowledge of muscle. The strength of the book is the roster, of contributors present at the Dedham, Mass Conference in May 1962 under the auspices of the Retina Foundation; almost every important biochemist and physiologist working on muscle is represented. Even though much of the work has been published elsewhere, it is more than a convenience to have it all in a single volume. Important new evidence obtained in the interim between presentation and publication is given in the form of footnotes, an effective device.
