This volume presents 22 contributions by neurologists in Europe and in the United States on subjects relating to the higher functions of the human central nervous system. In the first half of the book, a number of subjects relating to disorders of language and speech are presented. Denny-Brown discusses the physiological basis of perception and speech. Monrad-Krohn presents observations on disturbances of the prosodic quality of speech. The disturbances in language function occurring in polyglots with dysphasia are reviewed by M. Minkowski, and Critchley describes the language of gesture. Current concepts of the physiology of anosognosia, of prosopagnosia, and of disorders of visual perception are presented.

Each subject is presented by an authority on the special area reviewed by him, and appropriate references to recent literature are included with each presentation.
