This volume is a complete report of an international symposia on the mechanism and management of congenital malformations, held in July, 1963.

There were eight sessions which concerned themselves primarily with the genetic and biochemical factors involved in development. The subjects covered included: cytogenetics, cell genetics, genetic variations in proteins, gene action in relation to differentiation and development, developmental mechanisms, extrinsic factors in congenital malformations of man, epidemiologic studies, and management of human congenital defects.

The rapidity of the advances in the field of genetics during the past decade with a new and often confused terminology has often been a problem to the investigator and has overwhelmed the clinician. The section on cytogenetics is a superb discussion of the present status of chromosomal anomalies.
