Doctor Matthews has written a book emphasizing the evaluation and treatment of neurological symptoms as they present to the general practitioner. He has consciously avoided detail, special methods of examination, as well as the underlying neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. The subjects selected range from headache, blackouts, giddiness, pain in the leg, and difficulty in walking, to an approach to the incurable patient, as well as other common problems. The presentations are not intended to be all inclusive and descriptions in depth or listing extensive bibliographic references have been avoided.

The author's approach is based on his personal experience and aimed at the early evaluation of neurological symptoms in a general hospital setting rather than in a neurological center.
