The sixth edition of Dr. Rudolf Thiel's well-known work has been translated into English by three professors of Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Drs. Dupont Guerry, Walter J. Geeraets and Herbert Wiesinger. In their translation they have endeavored to portray the author's ideas and intent.
In the preface to the sixth edition the author states that "more than other specialists, the ophthalmologist is dependent upon visual impressions in both practice and teaching" and that "often visual impressions are the beginning of theoretical considerations." The two volumes have 1881 excellent figures—photographs of patients, gross and microscopic pictures of pathological lesions of the eye and occasionally of lesions in other portions of the body when they occur in relation to disease of the eye.
