This monograph is an updated and much expanded sequel to Anoxia: Its Effects on the Body, written by Dr. Van Liere in 1942. It is the stated purpose of the present work to "stimulate further research in this extremely important area" but also that these researches will lead "to the alleviation of suffering caused by disease." The authors have made many contributions to furthering our understanding of oxygen deficiency, the most significant being in the area of acclimatization. They are thus well qualified to edit this type of book.
After an excellent 17-page introductory chapter on classification and fundamentals, the authors consider in an orderly manner the experimental methods of producing hypoxia and analyze the effects of hypoxia on various organ systems. Chapters on altitude sickness, acclimatization, and resistance to hypoxia are also included.
