We appreciate the interest taken by Bianchin et al in our recently published article. As mentioned in the discussion, our findings of a sex difference in outcome do not have a clear explanation. Although the main objective of the study was to explore if there were racial/ethnic differences in seizure outcome following temporal lobe epilepsy surgery, the findings of sex difference in outcome was something that needed to be reported.
Neurobiological differences in terms of seizure severity and frequency have been previously found in animal1-2 and human studies.3-4 Furthermore, the plasticity found in women compared with men in terms of memory and seizures5 raises the suspicion that similar mechanisms may play a role in brain response following surgery.
